Timbaland Issues Apology Over AI Music Post: “That’s On Me”

Grammy-winning producer Timbaland has issued a public apology after unknowingly using a beat without the original producer’s consent in a recent AI-generated music demo. The track, which was run through Suno, an AI-powered music tool, featured a beat originally created by producer KFresh, who did not give permission for its use.

In a statement titled “Statement from Timbaland”, the legendary hitmaker explained the situation stemmed from a moment of excitement and experimentation. “I didn’t monetize it, release it, or try to claim ownership,” Timbaland said. “I was genuinely inspired and wanted to demonstrate what’s possible. But I now understand that the song’s beat was produced by a producer named KFresh, who didn’t give consent, and that’s on me.”

The beat was submitted to Timbaland under the impression that it was clear to use. However, he acknowledged that he failed to do proper due diligence, leading to an unintentional breach of creative boundaries.

“I should have done my due diligence before using it,” he admitted. “Regardless of the intent, I recognize that not everyone involved was aware or onboard, and I take full responsibility for that oversight.”

The post in question has since been taken down, and Timbaland emphasized that his goal has never been to take from creators, but to empower them. “The narrative that I’m out here stealing music couldn’t be further from the truth,” he added.

The situation has sparked conversations about consent, credit, and ethical AI usage in the music industry—a space Timbaland is deeply invested in through his AI media company, Stage Zero. He closed his statement by reaffirming his commitment to learning and leading “with respect for the craft and the community.”

💬 What This Means for the Industry

This moment serves as a key reminder for both veterans and emerging creators: even in an age of AI innovation, transparency, respect, and proper credit remain non-negotiable. As Timbaland continues to push boundaries with technology, he’s made clear that creators will remain at the center—not casualties—of the process.
