NYC-based singer-songwriter Cam Sakkara releases her newest single “My Therapist’s Couch.” The self-written and co-produced neo-soul track tackles the discussion on mental health over a mid tempo, percussion driven soundscape. Sakkara sings about the intersection of therapy and theology sharing “I heal at the altar and on my therapist’s couch.” She says, “Being a Christian, I felt like this was an important discussion topic. There is a history in the church of the belief that we don’t need therapy, we only need Jesus. But Jesus and therapy are not mutually exclusive. You can have both. Going to therapy doesn’t mean you have any less faith in God’s abilities. He can work through someone else to heal you. Just like if you need a heart transplant and have the opportunity to be given a new heart, you’re not going to say ‘God will heal my heart.’ You’re going to let a surgeon give you a new one.” She hopes this song will continue the conversation on mental health in faith-based spaces and continue to remove the stigma that comes with going to therapy.
