EARNEST PUGHRECOVERS FROM COVID-19 WITH SONGS IN HIS HEART

0

Houston, TX: Renowned gospel singer, Earnest Pugh, best-known for Billboard No. 1 hits such as “Rain on Us” and “I Need Your Glory,” has returned from the brink of death. Last summer, he was in a Houston area veteran’s hospital battling a severe case of COVID-19. He was on a ventilator for ten days. His oxygen level dropped to 70. His temperature crested to 102 for over a week as he developed double pneumonia. Pugh’s condition became so acute that the medical staff contemplated inducing a coma so that they could better address his issues. “My physicians said they hadn’t seen anyone with a case as bad as mine make a turnaround,” Pugh confesses. “They also feared the ventilator would harm my singing ability if by some miracle, I did survive.”

At that juncture, Pugh’s daughter, Kira,  reached out to Pastor Ralph Douglas West and the Church Without Walls church family to pray. ”I believe that made the turn around,” Pugh adds. “After the church started praying for me, my oxygen jumped from 72 to 85 within hours. Millions didn’t make it, but I was one of the ones who did make it.”

Pugh’s recovery inspired him to remake Evelyn Turrentine-Agee’s up-tempo gospel classic, “God Did It” (P Man Music / Estabrookroad Records), as his new single. He transformed it from a quartet track to a quartet meets New Orleans brass band vamp. “Those are the three words I said when I was out of the woods,” Pugh adds. “God did it!”

The Memphis native is also expressing his appreciation to America through a soul-stirring rendition of that releases July 1st in time to commemorate Independence Day 4th of July holiday.  The retired ARMY sergeant spent 15 years in the armed services. “I’ve always had a sense of pride about America,” Pugh says . “I joined the military at the age of 18. It was simply my part to help make the world a better place. Is American perfect? Absolutely not, but I seek to magnify her best qualities. She’s my choice and my home. She’s beautiful to me.”

Legendary worship leader and songwriter Graham Kendrick is going back to where it all began to celebrate 50 years in the ministry and you can be there too.

A Step FWD, one of the organisers of Graham Kendrick Live in London, is offering you the chance to enter a competition to win a ticket to the show at Community Church, Putney on Saturday 11th June. The church is where Graham, who is regarded as the ‘father of modern worship music’ took his first steps in Christian music ministry over five decades ago.

Fresh from singing in front of thousands at Big Church Day Out this past weekend and at the 50th Prom Praise at the Royal Albert Hall last month, Graham Kendrick Live in London promises to be a more intimate affair.

The composer will be delving into his extensive back catalogue at the event, as well as airing some new songs from his most recent EP “Where it Began”. Since those fledgling forays into music half a century ago, Kendrick has written and recorded hundreds of songs which are well known around the world, such as ‘Shine Jesus Shine’, ‘Knowing You’, ‘The Servant King’, ‘Meekness and Majesty’ and ‘Amazing Love’.

His music is familiar to millions. Many of the songs from his 40 albums have been sung in churches and schools globally, helping people to express their hearts in worship. Graham’s music has also influenced generations of artists and songwriters to follow in his footsteps including the likes of Martin Smith and Noel Robinson to name a few.

Early Bird tickets for the event have already sold out and people are being urged to book their tickets now to avoid disappointment. “This truly is a special event you don’t want to miss, so I would book tickets as soon as possible,” says Event Manager and A Step FWD founder, O’Neil Dennis. “It’s a chance to get up close and personal to a true living legend and experience intimate performances of his incredible back catalogue.”

In December, Graham was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural Step FWD Awards – the UK’s definitive Christian & Gospel music awards.

The partnership for Graham 50th anniversary marker was birthed when O’Neil Dennis personally delivered the replacement award to Graham at his home early in the New Year.

“It is an absolute honour and privilege to be involved in this event to celebrate Graham,” says Dennis. “He is somebody who 50 years later is still active, is so real and down to earth, yet is still inspiring the next generation of worship leaders. He has a heart to share the Gospel and for humanity and he is great to be around and has so much wisdom, I just had to get involved. You do not want to miss this.”

To mark this momentous occasion a free ticket will be given away via 10 media partner websites. Celebrity Attorney / Record Label Co-Founder – Ben Whitfield Passes Away

Detroit’s Former Assistant U.S. Attorney,

And Entertainment Lawyer

Who Represented Aaliyah, The Clark Sisters

BEN WHITFIELD, JR.

Passes Away at 76

Funeral Services Announced

Detroit, MI: Benjamin Whitfield, Jr.,a former  U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, and co-owner of Detroit-based Crystal Rose Records, passed away on May 18th at his home in Detroit. Over the course of his fifty-plus career, Whitfield successfully balanced his call to service in government  and jurisprudence while also steering the ship of one of the most successful independent gospel music recording labels of the 1990s and early 2000s.

Benjamin Whitfield, Jr. was born on March 6, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan – the eldest of five children. An enterprising youth, he landed his first job at the age of twelve when he became a hat blocker at Meeks Dry Cleaners where he worked  until the age of sixteen. The owner, John O. Meeks,  a successful African American businessman, was an inspiration to him. “ Mr. Meeks told Ben that if he kept his grades up, that he’d pay his tuition to college, and he kept his word. He paid the tuition for Ben to attend Wayne State University,” his sister Mae Collins explains.

After graduating from Eastern High School, Whitfield attended Wayne State University, but finished his bachelor’s degree at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. Later, he earned his juris doctorate from Texas Southern University Law School and was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1973. From 1974 to 1979, he served as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan where he served under State Attorney General, Frank J. Kelley. In 1981, he was admitted to and qualified as an Attorney and Counselor of the United States Court of Claims. In private practice, he formed Benjamin Whitfield , Jr. & Associates where he specialized in probate, divorce, civil and criminal cases. “If you ever witnessed Ben in the courtroom, it was a sight to behold,” laughs his business partner, Brian Spears. “Ben was so stubborn that he was going to press whatever the issue was until his client won. He was relentless and refused to give-up.”

When Whitfield’s Central State University dormmate, Barry Hankerson, had become a power-broker  music manager for the likes of Gladys Knight, R. Kelly, and Aaliyah; he often called on Whitfield to handle various legal matters. For years, he represented the legendary gospel group, The Clark Sisters, and managed the enterprises of their mother, Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, who was the longest-serving International Minister of Music for the Church of God in Christ (COGIC).

In 1993, Whitfield had the idea to launch a record label. He formed Detroit-based Crystal Rose Records with his nephew Michael J. Powell (who produced Anita Baker’s breakthrough album, Rapture), Brian Spears (a veteran music industry executive), and singer/producer, Donald Lawrence. “He was a dad, a big brother, a mentor, a biz partner, a protector,” the GRAMMY® Award winning and gold-selling Lawrence, says of Whitfield whom he first met in the late 1980s. “He did my very first contract with Irving Azoff and Cassandra Mills at Giant Records. He partnered with me on A Songwriter’s Point of View – The Tri-City Singers’ first album, which was licensed to GospoCentric Records. He also partnered on the stage play I wrote, `A Woman Like That,’ which starred Peabo Bryson. He taught me everything about the record biz…”

Aside  from Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers, Crystal Rose boasted a roster that also featured Ricky Dillard & New G., Earnest Pugh, Rodney Posey, Brenda Waters, Michael Mindingall, and  The Whitfield Company, among others. In 2002, Billboard Magazine cited Crystal Rose as one of the Top Ten independent gospel labels in the business.“Benny kept his professional life separate from his family life,” Mae recalls. “It wasn’t until this week that I realized how prominent my brother was because he never talked about his career. He didn’t brag on himself. I’m so proud of him and I hate that I can’t tell him how proud I am. He was quiet about his accomplishments. He was focused on his work and there’s nothing he would not do for you.”

Whitfield, who was divorced, is survived by his sister Mae Collins, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family. Aside from his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Pauline Alfred, Bernard Whitfield, and Melvin Whitfield; and three stepsisters Reola Powell, Jesse B. Whitfield, and Emmylou Morris.
